PSHE and RSHE

 Intent

In our school our Christian Values shapes all we do. We pride ourselves on applying our Christian Values to ensure Upton Snodsbury CofE First School is a place where a love for learning grows.

The intent of our PSHE curriculum is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximise the outcomes for every child so that their love for learning grows. As a result of this they will become healthy, independent and responsible members of a society who understand how they are developing personally and socially, who have the confidence to tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.

RSHE

Our RSHE programme (developed through Coram Life Education) is integral to our PSHE curriculum and further develops our pupils' self-awareness, self esteem and confidence to enable them to develop positive relationships and make positive decisions in their lives. We also apply our school Christian values of respect and trust to have open discussions and share our thoughts with our peers and staff.

Whilst prioritising for younger children the emotional, social and cultural development, it teaches children in older year groups about relationships, sexual health, sexuality, healthy lifestyles, diversity and personal identity in an age appropriate way. RSHE involves a combination of sharing information and exploring issues and values. RSHE is not about the promotion of personal

The aims of relationships and sex education (RSHE) at Upton Snodsbury are to:

  • Provide a framework in which sensitive discussions can take place
  • Prepare pupils for puberty, and give them an understanding of sexual development and the importance of health and hygiene
  • Help pupils develop feelings of self-respect, confidence and empathy
  • Create a positive culture around issues of sexuality and relationships
  • Teach pupils the correct vocabulary to describe themselves and their bodies

We will support children to ask questions in an emotionally safe environment, helping to dispel myths and provide them with the information and self-assurance necessary to make informed decisions in an ethical way that are right for themselves and for others. It builds up knowledge and skills which are particularly important today because of the many different and conflicting pressures on young people.
