Intent

At Upton Snodsbury C of E First School, we believe that a high-quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, as they grow in self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. Our school Christian Values shapes all we do. We pride ourselves on applying our Christian Values to ensure Upton Snodsbury CofE First School is a place where a love of learning grows.

The National Curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils:
• Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music
• Be taught to sing, create and compose music
• Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated.

All children are given a range of opportunities to perform throughout the year at events such as the Christmas performance, assemblies and our end of year performance. Children begin their musical learning journey in Early Years, where they enjoy learning, singing and performing nursery rhymes.  In Key Stage 1, the children will continue to gain confidence when singing familiar songs and be able to add musical elements to their performance. They will begin to develop their listening skills to compare and evaluate different styles of music. As the children move into Key Stage 2, they perform more complex pieces and begin to compose their own pieces, using notation which they then reflect on.

As a whole school, the children explore a range of musical styles and learn about the history of music through assemblies, themed days and visitors. Key Stage Two continue to learn the history of music in class with a focus on a range of artists and composers through the years. The children are able to use the inter-related dimensions of music to describe and reflect on a piece of music.
